Relevance

The ICT and telecommunications area is rapidly developing, with new innovations impacting on every aspect of daily life, from health care to computers to transport. Each innovation brings the possibility of entirely new product developments. It is a robust and exciting sector to work in, with new specialization constantly emerging.

India is the world's largest sourcing destination for the information technology (IT) industry, accounting for approximately 67 per cent of the US$ 124-130 billion market. The industry employs about 10 million workforces. More importantly, the industry has led the economic transformation of the country and altered the perception of India in the global economy. India's cost competitiveness in providing IT services, which is approximately 3-4 times cheaper than the US, continues to be the mainstay of its Unique Selling Proposition (USP) in the global sourcing market. However, India is also gaining prominence in terms of intellectual capital with several global IT firms setting up their innovation centres in India.

The Indian IT and ITeS industry is divided into four major segments – IT services, Business Process Management (BPM), software products and engineering services, and hardware.
The IT-BPM sector which is currently valued at US$ 143 billion is expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 8.3 per cent year-on-year to US$ 143 billion for 2015-16. The sector is expected to contribute 9.5 per cent of India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and more than 45 per cent in total services export in 2015-16. The Indian IT sector is expected to grow at a rate of 12-14 per cent for FY2016-17 in constant currency terms. The sector is also expected triple its current annual revenue to reach US$ 350 billion by FY 2025.

Telecommunications is one of the fastest-moving sectors in the world: telecoms providers need to innovate continually in order to remain competitive. India is currently the world’s second-largest telecommunications market and has registered strong growth in the past decade and half. The Indian mobile economy is growing rapidly and will contribute substantially to India’s gross domestic product (GDP), according to report prepared by GSM Association (GSMA) in collaboration with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). With the government’s favourable regulation policies and 4G services hitting the market, the Indian telecommunication sector is expected to witness fast growth in the next few years.

There is a wide range of jobs for graduates, ranging from research and project management to software development. This is a fast-paced environment which will appeal to people who thrive on challenge and change. The requirement of skilled professionals to cater to the needs of India's growing information and communication technology (ICT) sector is set to go up. Techno-managers in this area are expected to demonstrate exceptional creative, problem-solving and project management abilities as well as excellent interpersonal skills for more client-facing roles and more importantly re-skilling to take up roles and move up the value chain.

The Degree: Masters in Management of Technology (IT & Telecom)to be conferred jointly by IIM Lucknow and IIIT-Delhi.

Program Commencement: The first batch for the program is expected to commence in August 2017.

The Program: Post Graduate Program in Telecom Technology and Management (IT and Telecom) is to develop future telecommunication & IT managers who understand ICT, telecommunication & software operations from management, finance, legal and regulatory perspectives. This is an interdisciplinary program designed to give skills necessary to manage telecommunications networks & IT Services.

The program emphasizes developing analytic abilities, making better decisions, developing and executing strategies, it addresses the managerial, technical as well as behavioral challenges of running organizations and complex systems. Create cross-functional Techno- Management leaders.

The program will be jointly run by integrating the basic strengths of following institutions :

  • IIM-Lucknow
  • IIIT-Delhi
  • Advanced Level Telecom Training Centre (ALTTC)

Together this consortium will be able to offer the best program which will combine the academic strength of and IIM Lucknow and IIIT-Delhi along with technological and infrastructural strength of ALTTC

Role of Participating Institutes

Role of IIIT-D: The coordinating office of this program will be IIIT-Delhi. Technical courses will be conducted by IIIT-D.

Role of IIML: Management courses will be covered by IIML at their Noida campus after completing technology courses.

Role of ALTTC: ALTTC will conduct hands-on training and lab sessions exclusively for these students.

Features of the Program

  • Truly Global Perspective in terms of exposure and course curriculum
  • Two year full time residential program with 1080 credit hours. The students will spend first year at IIIT-D including lab session at ALTTC. The second year courses will be conducted at IIML. The joint thesis will be done in the final trimester of the second year.
  • Program comprising of class room teaching, hands-on exposure to live telecom equipments and strong industry orientation.
  • Course curriculum is designed with inputs from leading telecom companies
  • Course taught by IIM and IIIT faculty and subject matter experts of ALTTC. The program will also have lectures by industry leaders.

Eligibility Criteria for Admissions

Essential Qualifications -

  • B.Tech/BE in ECE/EE/ CS/IT with at least 60% marks or equivalent CGPA [55% in case of the candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Differently Abled (DA).
  • MCA/MSc (with specialization in Electronics related subject), is considered equivalent to the B.Tech/BE degree in ECE/EE/ CS/IT. Their eligibility criteria are the same as given above.
  • Fresher candidates with good academic records are encouraged to apply. Essential requirements may be relaxed for exceptional candidates with the discretion of screening committee.
  • Applicants should note that the mere fulfillment of minimum eligibility criteria will not ensure consideration for shortlisting for admission process.
  • Minimum 3-years’ experience in Telecom/IT sector
  • GRE/GMAT score card (taken within 36 months of the last date of application).
