Research Opportunities In EV Design

Rising fossil fuel prices and demand for green energy commute options has given an impetus to the popularity of electric vehicles. Electric vehicles (EVs) have a lot of advantages over fossil fuel-powered vehicles. EVs are eco-friendly, have less moving parts and hence are highly efficient, cost-effective, low maintenance and provide a smooth ride. In a country like India where daily commute distances are generally less than 100 kms makes it a perfect market for EVs. The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship estimates that the EV industry is expected to create about 5 crore direct and indirect job opportunities by 2030.

This session explores challenges and career opportunities related to the EV industry. Various aspects related to the EV industry such as research, design and development, manufacturing of EVs and also charging infrastructure and policy making will be discussed. So join us for this insightful panel discussion.

Aravind Kumar Chandiran

Aravind Kumar Chandiran did his PhD from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) and a postdoctorate from University of California, Berkeley. Currently he an Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras and leading a Centre on Photo- and Electro- Chemical Energy (C-PEC). His group is working on various aspects of solar energy storage and conversion including solar water splitting, metal-air batteries, and lithium-ion battery operational safety.

His work covers all the way from atomic level tuning of materials and device physics to prototyping of products. His team works quite closely with both the government agencies and industries to solve the energy related problems. Some of their flagship research outcomes include, (i) the development of kWh scale, low cost and safe mechanically rechargeable zinc-air batteries, (ii) indigenously developed battery safety analysis station that can simulate electrical, mechanical and thermal abuse, (iii) a grid independent building at IIT Madras using various energy storage devices including lithium-ion batteries and green hydrogen, and (iv) developed one of the brightest white light emitters. Their work on energy domain was both nationally and internationally acclaimed and fetched multiple awards/honours: Rising Stars in Energy & Fuels by American Chemical Society (USA), Emerging Investigator by Chemical Communications – Royal Society of Chemistry (UK), INSA Medal for Young Scientist (India), NASI Young Scientist Platinum Jubilee Award (India) and SERB Technology Translation Award (India).
