About the Workshop
With the exponential growth of mobile data traffic, the rollout of 5G and upcoming 6G networks, and the rapid adoption of digital services across homes, offices, and public spaces, in-building digital connectivity has emerged as a crucial component of India’s communication infrastructure. Today, more than 70% of mobile usage occurs indoors, yet signal degradation, inadequate cabling, and unplanned equipment deployment continue to affect the overall user experience. Achieving consistent, high-quality indoor coverage now requires a systematic approach to network design, passive infrastructure planning, and coordination between telecom operators, property developers, and regulatory agencies.
To address these challenges, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has notified the “Rating of Properties for Digital Connectivity Regulation, 2024,” introducing a first-of-its-kind framework for assessing, certifying, and promoting telecom-ready buildings. The framework standardizes key parameters such as ducting, fiber access, signal strength, and equipment layout, and introduces a Digital Connectivity Rating (DCR) system that allows properties to be evaluated transparently for their digital infrastructure quality. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance the way real estate, telecom service providers, and citizens perceive and prioritize digital connectivity as a core utility—on par with electricity and water.
Against this backdrop, the half-day workshop at Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi (IIIT-Delhi), organized in collaboration with TRAI, aims to create a shared platform for policy makers, researchers, developers, architects, and industry professionals to discuss the technical, regulatory, and design aspects of in-building connectivity. The sessions will focus on evolving data consumption trends, telecom infrastructure requirements, and standardization practices that can guide both new construction and retrofitting projects toward improved connectivity performance.
