The Department of Mathematics provides for a vibrant environment for research and teaching in Mathematics. The Department was set up in 2017 and offers a four-year undergraduate B.Tech. program in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics (CSAM), and a Ph.D. program in Mathematics. The Department currently consists of 18 faculty members and over 25 Ph.D. students.

Title of the talk : Why Primes?
Abstract: Primes are building blocks of integers and are quite mysterious in nature. Understanding primes and their properties has been a big challenge for mathematicians.In this lecture, I will focus on some importance of understanding primes and talk about some applications of prime properties in mathematics and in the modern world.

Title of the talk : The Sphere Packing Problem - a Breakthrough
Abstract: In this talk I will explain the Sphere packing problem in an n-dimensional Euclidean space. We will define the density of a 'packing' of space by congruent spheres. The problem is to maximise the density. We discuss the cases of dimension 1,2 and 3. With an interesting analysis using Fourier, the general problem becomes one of finding a 'magic function' to get an upper bound for the density.
