Smriti Singh is an Assistant Professor of Sociology in the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH). She teaches courses on Gender and Media, Intersectionality Studies, Urban Sociology, Gender and Urban Space, and Sociology of India. Her monograph, The Middle Class in Neo-Urban India: Space, Class and Distinction (Routledge, 2023), examines the socio-spatial formation of the Indian middle class in contemporary urban contexts. She earned her PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi in 2017, and was a Fulbright-Nehru Scholar (2015–2016) at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA.
Her research interests include urban space, community, identity, gender, and everyday urban life. Alongside peer-reviewed scholarship, she regularly publishes short pieces and sociological commentaries on a wide range of contemporary social and political issues, engaging both academic and public audiences. She has previously taught at Ambedkar University, Delhi; Azim Premji University, Bengaluru; and Lady Shri Ram College for Women, University of Delhi.
She prides herself on being both a learner and an educator. In her free time, she enjoys good coffee, reading and discussing fiction, listening to music, and following political satire and stand-up comedy.
